Solar Pool Heating Systems

Solar Pool Heating Systems

Solar Pool heating  can easily add months to your swimming season. Solar heating works by collecting free energy from the sun and transferring it to your pool, solar pool heaters allow you to open your pool earlier, and keep your pool open long after your neighbors have closed theirs up for the season.

With a Solar Pool Heating System, you’ll get the satisfaction of knowing that you’re heating your pool with the most cost-effective, cleanest, most environmentally friendly source of energy there is…the sun!

Cost Effective

Installing a Solar Pool heating System Will significantly reduce swimming pool heating costs. They’re cost competitive with both gas and heat pump pool heaters, and they have very low annual operating costs. Actually, solar pool heating is the most cost-effective use of solar energy in many climates.

An example of a solar pool heater

 Solar Equipment

Most Solar Pool Heating Systems require the following:

Solar Collector - the device through which pool water is circulated to be heated by the sun.

Filter – removes debris before water is pumped through the collector.

Pump – circulates water through the filter and collector and backs to the pool.

A Flow Control Valve –  Automatic or manual device that diverts pool water through the solar collector.  Pool water is pumped through the filter and then through the solar collector(s), where it is heated before it is returned to the pool. In hot climates, the collector(s) can also be used to cool the pool during peak summer months by circulating the water through the collector(s) at night.

Some systems include sensors and an automatic or manual valve to divert water through the collector(s) when the collector temperature is sufficiently greater than the pool temperature. When the collector temperature is similar to the pool temperature, filtered water simply bypasses the collector(s) and is returned to the pool.

Solar pool collectors are made out of different materials. The type you’ll need depends on your climate and how you intend to use the collector. If you’ll only be using your pool when temperatures are above freezing, then you’ll probably only need an unglazed collector system. Unglazed collectors don’t include a glass covering (glazing). They are generally made of heavy-duty rubber or plastic treated with an ultraviolet (UV) light inhibitor to extend the life of the panels. Because of their inexpensive parts and simple design, unglazed collectors are usually less expensive than glazed collectors. These unglazed systems can even work for indoor pools in cold climates if the system is designed to drain back to the pool when not in use. Even if you have to shut the system down during cold weather, unglazed collectors may be more cost effective than installing a more expensive glazed collector system.

Glazed collector systems are generally made of copper tubing on an aluminum plate with an iron-tempered glass covering, which increases their cost. In colder weather, glazed collector systems—with heat exchangers and transfer fluids—capture solar heat more efficiently than unglazed systems.   Thus, they can be used year-round in many climates. Glazed collectors also can be used to heat domestic hot water year-round.

Both glazed and unglazed collector systems should include freeze protection if they’ll be used in colder conditions.

EVALUATING YOUR SITE’S SOLAR RESOURCE

Before installing a Solar Pool Heating System, you first need to consider your site’s solar resource. The efficiency and design of a solar pool heater depends on how much of the sun’s energy reaches your building site.

Solar pool heating systems use both direct and diffuse solar radiation. Therefore, even if you don’t live in a climate that’s warm and sunny most of the time – like the southwestern United States- your site still might have an adequate solar resource. Basically, if your building site has un-shaded areas and generally faces south, it’s a good candidate for a solar pool heating system. Your local solar system supplier or installer can perform a solar site analysis.

Solar system contractors use worksheets and computer programs to help determine system requirements and collector sizing.

Basically, the surface area of your solar collector should equal 50%–100% of the surface area of your pool. In cooler and cloudier areas, you may need to increase the ratio between the collector area and the pool surface area. Adding collector square footage also lengthens the swimming season.

For example in northern California, most people use outdoor pools 6–8 months per year, so they typically size their systems at 60%–70% of the pool’s surface area.

In any climate, you can usually decrease the required collector area by using a pool cover.

You’ll also want a properly sized pool pump for a solar system. If you’re replacing a conventional pool heating system with a solar system, you may need a pump larger than your current one or a separate, smaller pump to move the pool’s water to and through the collectors. Collectors can be mounted on roofs or anywhere near the swimming pool that provides the proper exposure, orientation, and tilt toward the sun. Both the orientation and tilt of the collector will affect your solar pool heating system’s performance. Your contractor should consider them while evaluating your site’s solar resource and sizing your system.

Solar pool heater collectors should be oriented geographically to maximize the amount of daily and seasonal solar energy that they receive. In general, the optimum orientation for a solar collector in the northern hemisphere is true south. However, recent studies have shown that, depending on your location and collector tilt, your collector can face up to 45º east or west of true south without significantly decreasing its performance. You’ll also want to consider factors such as roof orientation (if you plan to mount the collector on your roof), local landscape features that shade the collector daily or seasonally, and local weather conditions (foggy mornings or cloudy afternoons), as these factors may affect your collector’s optimal orientation.

You can usually mount collectors flat on your roof, which might not be at the optimum angle but more aesthetically pleasing. You will, however, want to take roof angle into account when sizing your system.

INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE

The proper installation of a solar pool heating system depends on many factors. These factors include solar resource, climate, local building code requirements, and safety issues. Therefore, it’s best to have a qualified solar thermal systems contractor install your system.

A solar pool heater is clean, easy, cost effective, and gives your family and friends more swimming fun every year.

How Gunite and Shotcrete Pools Are Made.

LOGO

Gunite pools are easily, the most popular Swimming Pools in Southren Califorina. Gunite pools (and their cousins,Shotcrete pools) are highly durable, and can be built in any shape or size. Here I will give you an outline of the process at Universal Pool and Spa’s San Pedro Job site in Los Angeles County.  How Gunite and Shotcrete Swimming Pools are created: We dig a hole, put the plumbing in place and assemble a framework grid with 3/8-inch steel rebar. The rebar rods are spaced about 10 inches apart, and secured together with wire.

IMG_0040

When this foundation grid is in place, the crew sprays a coating of gunite which is a mixture of cement and sand, around the rebar. The sprayer unit combines dry gunite mix with water just before spraying — this produces the wet concrete material. Universal Pool and Spa Has it’s own Gunite/Shotcrete equipment so we can keep everything in house.
IMG_0056 Below is a short video of concrete being pneumatically applied to a swimming pool wall Recently at our San Pedro, California  Jobsite.

IMG_086

With both Shotcrete and Gunite, the entire concrete mixture is combined at the concrete plant, including the water in the mixture, before being transported to the jobsite in concrete trucks. This is the same procedure that is used for the more traditional concrete with the exception of the lower water content in the Shotcrete/Gunite mixture.IMG_0043

Once the concrete arrives at the jobsite, it is poured into the pump,IMG_0060and sprayed under pressure into place in layers through a back-and-forth motion of the nozzle.IMG_0057 The Shotcrete application continues until the designed wall thickness is achieved. Shotcrete has a higher amount of cement and a lower amount of water than that of regular concrete. The formula results in a concrete mix that is dry enough to be applied to vertical surfaces such as pool walls.
The crew trowels the gunite smooth and lets it sit for a week or two before applying a smooth finish to the rough surface.IMG_0062

Shotcrete and gunite products have been used to create tunnels through mountains for roadways for decades. Many of the interstate tunnels you may have driven through were constructed using these forms of concrete.IMG_0006

Both Shotcrete and Gunite are what is referred to as “Free Form” applications of concrete. Free form, by its very nature, enables concrete to be used to create very strong and water tight structures following any design shape. Call us (818) 347-6657 or email us  if you need a quote. We would love to help you with your designs and answer any questions you may have.

All About Infinity Pools

Infinity pools require extensive structural, mechanical (hydraulic engineering) and architectural detailing. Since they are almost always built in precarious locations (cliffs, mountain tops, beach front, etc.), sound structural engineering is paramount. The structural engineering must be based upon the geological conditions found on the site. A geotechnical report is commissioned prior to the commencement of the infinity pools structural engineering. The high costs of these pools are often found in the Swimming Pool foundation systems that anchor them to the hillsides.

Infinity Pool and Spa

Infinity Pool and Spa

A negative edge pool or “infinity pool” is an inground pool lacking one or more edges. An infinity pool creates the illusion that the water lacking edges is supported by nothing. The infinity pool is especially effective when the edgeless parts of the swimming pool are located over high ground that drops away, or near a water source like oceans or lakes. Near water, the infinity pool gives the illusion that the pool water does not end, and is harmoniously continued to the water source. On high ground, the infinity pool looks like a magic trick.

Negative Edge Pool

Negative Edge Pool

The negative edge pool is stunning at night, and owners of these infinity pool often enjoy their reflective ability. If a water source like a lake or ocean is below the pool, a view of the pool from several feet away seems to reflect the night sky and stars far out into the lake or ocean.

The infinity pool is beautiful, but it may be a poor choice for families with young children. For the infinity pools visual effects to work properly, fencing should not interrupt sight access to the pool. However, properly fencing any swimming pool in a house with young children is strongly recommended. Please see our article on swimming pool safety here.

Infinity pools both stunning and luxurious. If you would like to learn more on how you can have a custom built pool constructed by an award winning Los Angeles area Pool builder call us for a Free Consultation and Pool Design quote!(818)347-6657, or visit us  online Universal Pool and Spa.

The steel rods will be the foundational framework of the swimming pool, for shaping and contouring. The reinforced steel rods are wired together and spaced evenly in a way that will provide strength within the structure of the swimming pool.

 Application of Gunite:

Gunite is a popular swimming pool construction material in the Los Angeles area comprised of cement and sand and water that is pneumatically applied on a surface to the walls of the pool. Gunite is applied at a minimum compressive strength of 400psi. Before the application or shooting of Gunite, Universal will measure the distance of your home, garden, playground and parking lot to protect everything from any harmful airborne debris.

Cleaning your swimming pool pump

Cleaning your swimming pool pump
It is important that you clean your pool’s filtration equipment before you dive in. The swimming pool pump is at the center of the entire pool system. It is very important that swimming pool pumps be observed often to make sure that microbes and other debris don’t infect the pool. Making sure your pool is sanitized is crucial for you and your family.
A garden hose is required to maintain the swimming pool pump. You can also use a bucket of water. Make sure you turn off the switch to the swimming pool pump by taking out the plug or connection from the pool pump. Then, look at the rim of the pool’s pump casing. You can get rid of it when you use a specialized rubber mallet. Next you should get the pump cover and inner lining and check if the ring is broke, that way you will know if you need to substitute this part. You can purchase substitutes at local hardware stores.
Now that you have removed the pump cover, you should get the swimming pool pump and look at the pump’s shape. Is it basked form or circular? This is important that you learn more about the kind of equipment or part replacement you need to buy. Next, you should clean the filter by washing it thoroughly with a hose or bucket of water. After this is done you can substitute the swimming pool filter and put the cover back by screwing the part (you can use the rubber mallet to do this). The last step is to switch the power back on. Now you can check your pump for any leaks.
We at Universal Pool and Spa know that maintaining your swimming pool pump is extremely important. If you have any questions about cleaning your pool’s pump and would like your pool serviced, or if you’re in the Los Angeles area and are looking for a pool builder, please feel free to call us anytime: Universal Pool and Spa (818) 347-6657. Swimming Pool Decks

Decks
More people aim their focus on deciding what kind of swimming pool to install and what kind of swimming pool designs and materials to make it from, but they don’t spend as much time thinking about what kind of deck they’ll use. But if you think about it, you will spend as much time on the deck as you would in the swimming pool. Decks are also used for entertaining or just hanging out, so they demand more attention than they get in the planning process.
There is a lot to consider when designing your pools deck, for instance, will the deck be in the shade or sun? What deck materials will be used? Will you be adding a spa? Do you plan on having an outdoor kitchen or backyard bar? Do you want your deck to go all around your swimming pool, or only in a semi-circle? What kind, and how much deck furniture do you want? Will you have enough space to walk around the deck once the furniture is placed? These are just some of the questions you have to ask yourself when having a deck made for your pool. It is a wiser choice to go with a deck of larger size than making the mistake of having a deck too small. If you do plan on having an outdoor kitchen or backyard bar, your swimming pool deck should be adjacent to it.
What to consider when choosing pool deck material:
When choosing pool deck material, there are a lot of options. Wooden decks are popular because their inexpensive and easy to care for. Concrete decks are also affordable. They can be done in different colors and patterns and made to look like tile, stone or brick. Another kind of material for decks is composites. They are man-made materials that look like wood. Composites are made from a mixture of different materials, such as, plastic, wood and polymer resins. Composite decks are more costly than wood but require less attention in upkeep because they are designed to resist rot, warping and insect infestation. Concrete pavers are also a good choice. If you choose to use concrete pavers you will be able to mix and match shape, sizes and colors and create your own unique deck pattern. Tile decks, if chosen, should be unglazed to avoid slipping. Installing unglazed tile can add a touch of elegance to the pool décor. There are different shapes, sizes and colors to choose from, but square tiles are most commonly used.
Universal Pool and Spa are your go-to professionals when it comes to swimming pool decks and designs. We just finished building a swimming pool complete with a rock waterfall in Burbank, Ca. We built an outdoor bar adjacent to the deck and added a fire pit surrounded by lounge chairs. We used our 3D design team to create a picture of what everything would look like when the job was complete. Our client was satisfied with knowing what to expect before the building process had even begun.

Exterior Overhangs

Exterior Overhangs
Refine the looks of your property by adding decorative elements. The best decorative elements bring practical uses. Custom overhangs provide protective shade while improving your property’s aesthetic appearance. Universal Pool and Spa specializes in design, building, and installation of custom overhangs, not to mention various types of construction (including swimming pools and remodeling homes). We are an award winning construction company serving Los Angeles and surrounding areas.
Overhangs are essential for maintaining the structural integrity of your home by protecting the doors, windows, and sides of the walls from outdoor weather elements. Overhangs also prevent water damage and minimize the need for repainting and redecoration along with other exterior house maintenance. In the summer they also reduce you’re A/C costs by shading windows and doors from the sun. Larger overhangs provide more protection. Overhangs provide shade and are most effective at midday. Roof overhangs can be all sizes, and they need not be purely utilitarian. Roof overhangs create a shaded patio. An overhang blocks the sun’s radiation from hitting the building directly. The beauty of these architectural devices is that they can be designed to block summer sun while allowing winter.
Overhangs come in many different styles. You can choose from solid, louvered, and vegetation supporting. Wood overhangs create a warm look. Translucent overhangs with metal frame are also very popular. The size, type and angle of your overhang depend on the direction of the sun’s rays relative to the geographical location of your home. The wrong angle will defeat the purpose of the overhang.

Inground swimming pool filters

Inground swimming pool filters

With such a large selection of swimming pool filters now increasing in number and prices, it makes it more difficult in knowing which filter is best for your pool. Universal Pool and Spa is here to break it down in simple terms to make your selection process a little easier.
What swimming pool owner doesn’t want crystal clear water for their pool? With larger, deeper pools, absolute clarity can be an issue. No one wants cloudy water in their swimming pool. If your pool is surrounded by gardens or trees then you can be assured that a certain amount of foliage will end up in your pool. Swimming pool filters are an essential item when it comes to your pool.
Swimming pool sand filters are just one of several types of filters you can use to keep undesirable substances out of your swimming pool water. This particular swimming pool filteration material is a simple and popular way to filter water. They are simple, effective and require very little attention. How do swimming pool sand filters work? Pool water is routed through a sand-filled pressure vessel, over time dirt accumulates in the space between the sand particles, causing the pressure in the vessel to rise as water finds it harder to pass through. This signals you to “backwash” the filter. Simply reverse the water flow and “knock out” the dirt. Sand filters can help you reduce your pools TDS or incidence of dissolved and solid substances.
Another common swimming pool filter is the cartridge filter. The cartridge filter is popular for most spas and smaller pools. The cartridge filter element can be compared to the pleated air filter in your car. It traps dirt and particles of 25-100 microns in size. When the pressure gauge rises 8 to 10 lbs. above its clean reading, the cartridge should be removed from the tank and hosed down thoroughly from top to bottom with a high pressure hose, to remove the dirt. Do be careful though, too much water pressure can damage the cartridge. The cartridge should be replaced every 3-5 years, depending on the condition of your pool. Smaller filters may only last up to a year if your pool gets a lot of debris and algae. Larger cartridge filters can last more than 5 years and operate for 6 months between cleaning. But keep in mind that the older the filter, the less amount of time between cleanings.
The diatomaceous earth pool filter is known as the most efficient swimming pool filter on the market. This filter is capable of trapping particles down to 3-5 microns. Like most filters, the diatomaceous pool filter uses a pressure gauge to indicate when backwashing is needed. After backwashing a diatomaceous filter, a new application of filter powder is added to the filter by pouring it into the skimmer. It is necessary to break down the filter to thoroughly clean its grids once a year. The D.E. powder is what filters your swimming pool in a diatomaceous earth filter. Always make sure that the D.E. powder coats the grids before operating your pump, or you will see your pressure rise very quickly, and the grids can become damaged if left in this manner. Also, always be cautious not to pump D.E. waste water into streams or anywhere that aquatic animals reside, as it can choke small aquatic life. Your city may have discharge regulations for D.E. powder.

Gazebos for your Pool

Gazebos for your Pool
When hosting a backyard party, the swimming pool will most likely be the main attraction for your guests. Why not add to the enjoyment for your guests by making the area around your pool more hospitable. We at Universal Pool and Spa have the experience and expertise to help you do this and we recommend adding a gazebo adjacent to your swimming pool for the perfect touch! Gazebos provide you and your guests with a shaded place to relax at by the pool.
You may be thinking about placing your gazebo in the middle of your yard for decorative balance, but the best place for a gazebo is near other landscaping features. Gazebos work especially nice in a garden or near water. These are all things you should consider when choosing the size of your gazebo. Purpose, budget and decorative balance should also be put into consideration. A smaller gazebo is more intimate, but less useful when you plan to have many guests visit your home. A larger gazebo will accommodate more guests, but can overwhelm the landscaping of your backyard. We at Universal Pool and Spa have built every size gazebo for every type and size of backyard, so we have the experience in helping choose the perfect gazebo for you.
For general landscaping purposes, a gazebo will serve as a more beautifying object than a patio or deck. Deck gazebos add elegance to your pool and backyard. Gazebos provide a covered area to set up a buffet table or gathering areas for outdoor parties. They are also a popular accommodation for weddings and receptions after religious ceremonies. Pool or no pool, Universal Pool and Spa is still the perfect choice in building a gazebo for you.

Gunite Pools

Gunite Pools
Gunite pools (also known as concrete pools) offer the ultimate when it comes to personalization and customization. What is pool gunite? Gunite is the strongest swimming pool structure you can select. It is a mixture of cement and sand sprayed onto contoured and supportive surfaces to build a pool. A dry gunite mixture is pumped to the site and water is added when applied. Plaster is the material that is visible and comes into contact with the water. It is usually applied over the gunite. Gunite construction offers the greatest versatility when it comes to the shape and size of your swimming pool. When it comes to incorporating features such as spas, automatic swimming pool covers, and infinity edge to your pool design, gunite offers the greatest flexibility. Check out this infinity edge pool made from gunite that we built in Beverly Hills, Ca. (picture of infinity pool here)
Gunite pool resurfacing: If your gunite pool surface feels rough and pitted, or if your tile is fading or cracked, Universal Pool and Spa can provide you with the best gunite swimming pool repair services needed to give your swimming pool an appearance even better than when it was new. Here is a gunite pool we resurfaced in Woodland Hills, Ca. (picture of gunite pool here)
Gunite pools are a top choice for homeowners today due to their beauty, versatility and durability. If you are in the market for an inground swimming pool, Universal Pool and Spa will give you precise building terms and a construction timetable to make sure your project is completed properly and on time for your needs.

Inground Swimming Pool Plumbing

Inground Swimming Pool Plumbing
When it comes to a new swimming pool project, the size of the plumbing is the most important aspect you should know about. The movement of the water that goes to and from your swimming pool depends on pipe size. This is more important than pump size. You can’t put a larger pump on a pool with a smaller pipe, but you can put a larger pump on a pool with larger pipe. You would be better off with 2.5” plumbing and a ¾ h.p. pump than 1.5” h.p. pump. This is due to the volume that flows through the larger pipes vs. the smaller ones.
If you did swimming pool plumbing in 1.5” pipe and tried to put a 2 h.p. full rated pump on it for circulation, you would actually put a stain on the pump due to the force of trying to move more water than the pipes are capable of moving. This is called cavitation vibration, noise and potential damage to your pool equipment. You will also experience a drop in the pumps efficiency and the pump will not be able to achieve its regular pressure.
You should consider if a 1.5” pipe moves ½ as much water as a 3” pipe. Logically 1.5” x 2 = 3 right? So you assume this is right, right? Wrong actually, a 3” pipe move 275 gpm vs. 85 gpm for the 1.5” or over three times the amount.

Landscape for Hot Tubs and Spas

Landscape for Hot Tubs and Spas

Landscaping options around your hot tub differ from the landscaping around your pool. Hot tubs are typically placed on a deck or some other raised surface. Hot tubs are more in line with an above ground swimming pool than an inground swimming pool, because of this, there is more to focus on when it comes to your landscaping design.
Universal Pool and Spa has all the answers you seek when it comes to the landscaping around your hot tub. Potted plants, flowers or shrubs are good decorating ideas. Tall ferns will look good on either side of the steps. Plants that are lower to the ground will look good around the rest of your structure. The ferns act as a frame and give your hot tub an exotic appeal when you enter. Ferns even look good around the perimeter of the hot tub when placed properly so the leaves don’t fall into the water.
If you plan on having your hot tub placed in a secluded area of your yard, you have provided yourself with privacy and are on your way to landscaping your hot tub into a grotto. If you choose an area that is surrounded by trees, you may want to consider a screened or open sided gazebo. Just make sure it has a roof to protect from falling leaves and other debris. If you choose a gazebo then you might want to consider hanging some flowering planters to fill the area with serene beauty and natural aroma.
Consider having us construct a small sand bar or rock wall around your hot tub. Incorporating a waterfall into the rock will add a touch of Feng-Shui and will enhance your relaxation. Adding a privacy screen in addition to the plants is also something good to consider.

Lap Pools

Lap Pools

Lap pools can now be a new luxury item with Universal Pool and Spa. We can build these pools to have an elongated shape that is very modern and elegant. Lap pools are not only good to have for you and your dog, they are good for anyone who has a limited amount of space. They take up a fraction of space compared to your traditional swimming pool. By taking up minimal space, you are able to focus on other areas of your backyard, like landscaping.
Lap pools allow room to exercise, splash around and enjoy swimming in general on a hot day, and you can still have ample space in your backyard. Active swimmers can get a great work-out with jets that provide resistance. Many clients include swimming lanes and ropes down the center to create a training atmosphere. Most lap pools have shallow and deep ends, with the shallow end being deep enough for a swimmers arm length.
We provide several models, each of which is designed to provide all the benefits of water exercise and hydrotherapy while meeting your unique spatial and aesthetic needs. Patio Bars

Patio Bars

Patio bars are a perfect addition to consider when acquiring a pool builder for your home. Whether you are often entertaining guests for a party at your home or you seek the comfort of a bar atmosphere without having to leave your home, a patio bar is the perfect choice for you. Patio bars give you the best way to limit traffic in and out of your house when having parties or gatherings. Limiting traffic will keep clean-up mostly to your backyard.
Patio bars come in various styles and designs. You can choose from a wet bar and a dry bar. Wet bars are convenient and add a nice touch to your deck or patio. Most wet bars are accompanied with beer kegs, refrigerators and various storage options. Wet bars are more expensive than dry bars because of plumbing, electricity and water costs but well worth it if you compare the costs to what you would spend on drinks at any public bar.
Dry bars are considerably less expensive and convenient with their portability. Tiki bars are very popular and bring that “island” feel to your backyard. There are quite a few different styles when it comes to tiki bars but the overall theme is tropical. If you are considering adding a tiki bar to an already planned pool construction, I suggest adding some palm trees, a waterfall, bamboo furniture and bamboo torches. All make for a perfect touch of Hawaii in your own backyard.
Are you considering having a pool built in your backyard and need new ideas on the perfect ways to entertain your guests? Do you already have a pool but it is boring and you’d like to add a bar? Whatever it is, from pools to bars to patios, we have the answers you are looking for. Call us now for a free consultation and design quote. Universal Pool and Spa (818) 347-6657.

Perimeter Overflow Pools

Perimeter Overflow Pools

The perimeter overflow pool is known as an extremely elegant, luxurious pool. This rare pool design shares a trait with the infinity-edge pool, only it takes the “edgeless” concept to an even further extreme. Perimeter overflow pools are designed so that water spills over on all sides. The water that flows over the sides is caught and re-circulated.
Perimeter overflow pools are known for their mirror-like image. The water surface is in almost constant motion. Because the water is in a relatively confined space, ripples and waves bounce off the sides, interacting and reinforcing each other. The water pours in a thin sheet over the edges, and because the water is not bound by anything, disturbances seize to persist after little time. The result is a smooth mirror like surface that blends in to the atmosphere and becomes serenity to its surroundings. Because of its reflective surface and mirror-like quality, a perimeter overflow pool will be visually linked to its surrounding architecture and landscaping, creating an integrated effect in a way that no ordinary pool can do.
Adding water features to a perimeter overflow pool is not usually a good idea because moving water will interfere with the stillness and unique tranquility that are the focal points of this pool. The shell of the perimeter overflow pool can be finished with a smooth dark colored material to play up its reflectivity.

Keeping Your Pets safe around the Swimming Pool

Pet Safety for your Pool
Thinking about having an inground swimming pool built in your backyard but you own pets, such as dogs or cats? There are ways to enjoy the comfort of a swimming pool and still make sure your pets are safe. Universal Pool and Spa is, once again, here to rescue you… and your pets!
There are many devices that attach to the sides of your pool, providing an escape route for your pet. One of them is called the Scamper Ramp. All sorts of creatures will find their way into your pool, not just a dog or cat. This will usually happen at night while you are sleeping and you will be unaware and unable to help these innocent creatures. The Scamper Ramp provides an exit route for animals up to approximately 30 lbs. For larger animals up to 70 lbs., the Super Scamper Ramp is what you need.
The Frog Log is a swimming pool escape ramp for frogs, toads, lizards, mice, chipmunks, squirrels, ducklings, turtles, bugs or insects, and other small animals up to one pound. Use several Frog Logs for large pools. Frog Logs save native wild life, keeps swimming pool water clean, and reduces time spent on pool maintenance. Once a frog, mouse, or other animal falls into the pool, they will instinctively swim toward the pool wall trying to escape. The animal will bump into the Frog Log, climb up the platform, climb the mesh ramp, and exit the pool.
The Safety Turtle is for dogs. Use the Safety Turtle just as you would for a child, only easier. Just attach the Turtle Wristband to your pets collar and you can have peace of mind, knowing that you will be alerted the instant that your dog goes in the water. Safety Turtle is great for dogs that cannot see the pools edge, or have little swimming ability. Safety Turtle is also used in pools without an easy point of egress for the dog.

Pool Exercise and Workouts

Pool Exercise and Workouts
Too hot outside for a workout? Afraid of germ infested gyms? The best way to workout on a hot day would be in your swimming pool of course! Swimming tones your body from head to toe and burns just as many calories as running without any impact on your knees or ankles. Swimming is the perfect exercise alternative to running and a good way to recover your body from a physical injury. The pool is a great place to try a variety of different workouts.

Water workouts are safe for people of any age. Workout in waist-high water is a good choice because it puts resistance on your legs and glutes. Water shoes are recommended to increase your comfort and add traction to your workout. Even though you are in the water, it is still necessary to drink plenty of water during your workout to stay hydrated.

Treading water in the deep end of the pool will burn a good amount of calories in a small amount of time. Keeping both of your legs straight with your toes pointed, while scissoring your legs back and forth, while treading is a good leg workout. I suggest treading for 30 seconds and resting for 30 seconds in between treads.
Jogging in the water can burn almost 20 calories per minute because of the resistance that water provides. Start by jogging at 1 to 2 minute intervals, taking short breaks in between, until you build up your intensity to longer jogging sessions.
Another good water workout which strengthens your core is called the “plank”. Use both hands to hold on to the side of the pool and keep your body straight behind you with your toes touching the floor of the pool. Hold this motion and use your core to keep your body stable and resist floating in the water.

If you remember swimming lessons as a kid, then you’ll already be familiar with “pool kicks”. Holding on to the sides of the pool while kicking your legs will burn some serious calories and help your lower back at the same time. For more of a workout, kick in a larger range of motion. Use small kicks for a longer period of time to keep your heart rate up for a good cardio workout.

Pool exercise will get you back in shape in no time! For more information on this or any other questions, call us now, we’re here to help you! Universal Pool and Spa (818) 347-6657.

Swimming Pool Party Ideas

If you live in Southern California then you know the heat aint going nowhere! And if you have a swimming pool then you should be planning a “pool party” to enjoy these hot California days. Whether it’s for your friends, your family, your co-workers or all of the above, Universal Pool and Spa has some perfect ideas to throw a fun-filled pool party that your guest’s won’t forget.
Beach themed pool party
Creating a backyard swimming pool beach party is simple. Decorate tables with sea shells and fish nets. Cover chairs with beach towels. You can also lay out beach towels on your deck or next to your swimming pool and use umbrellas. For gift items, hand out flip flops. Play some music by the Beach Boys and hand out snacks in plastic pails with shovels. Serve hamburgers, pizza and French fries (all boardwalk classics) and plate your food on Frisbees. Serve ice cream cones or snow cones as desert. Float toy sailboats and beach balls in the pool water. If you have a kids sand box, build a sand castle.
Hawaiian Luau themed pool party
Hawaiian Luau’s are a popular theme for a pool party. Have a Hawaiian vacation right in your own backyard. Decorations are affordable and easy to find. Attire should be Hawaiian print shirts and bathing suits. Greet your guests with store bought or hand-made leis. Decorate with bamboo and Hawaiian accessories (you can purchase these from your local pool supply store, craft store or party supply). Set up tiki torches and scatter tropical flowers across the tables and the pool. Serve your favorite tropical drinks in coconuts and provide a meal of pineapple chicken or ham or even roast a pig.
Movie night themed pool party
Bring out the big screen tv and make sure your party is for the night time. Put as many water loungers in your pool as possible and set-up the chairs to face the tv. Serve hot dogs, pizza and plenty of popcorn. For desert provide your guests with movie theatre candy such as Dots, Raisenettes, Milk Duds, Hot Tamales and Good n Plenty. Make your movie choice Jaws, Finding Nemo or The Little Mermaid.

Benefits of Using Saltwater on your swimming Pool

Salt Water Swimming Pools
The biggest new trend in swimming pools is salt water. Salt water pools offer many advantages over chlorine pools and have become very popular. Salt water pools contain only one tenth of the salt of ocean water. They are gentle on the skin and hair, unlike chlorine pools. With salt water pools you won’t have to deal with handling harsh chemicals, and the pool maintenance is easier, saving you both time and money.
Salt water is also known as saline. A saline purification system provides on-site production of the sanitizer necessary to maintain water in a safe, healthy and algae-free condition. Sanitizer is produced automatically , within the water itself, and involves no handling, storage or adding of any chemicals to the water. No red eyes, no green hair, no algae. Salt water/saline works great!
More and more chlorine pools are being converted to salt water pools. Today there are more than 1.4 million salt water pools nationwide. According to Pool and Spa News, an estimated 75 percent of all new in-ground pools are salt water. We at Universal Pool and Spa have converted many chlorine pools to salt water pools, we just converted a chlorine pool into a salt water pool in Sherman Oaks, Ca. and our client couldn’t be happier. Our clients are always very pleased with the difference. There is no longer that chemical smell. People also tell us that the pool water is much softer. Our clients have been very satisfied with this new system.
Chlorine chemically reacts with your hair and skin causing skin irritation and hair damage. Too much exposure to chlorine dries your skin and hair, leaving your skin itchy and your hair brittle. Chlorine also damages the oil and mineral balance of skin cells, destroying the fluid balance which causes dry, peeling skin. You can purchase moisturizers that treat this dry, irritated skin, and you can also purchase anti-chlorine damage shampoos to treat your hair, or you can avoid this altogether by opting for a salt water pool instead.
Chlorine is automatically produced as water passes through the generator in salt water pools. The water that leaves the generator enters the pool and the sanitizing chlorine reverts back to salt. The process repeats itself, conserving salt and keeping the sanitizer levels balanced. Although salt water pools require less maintenance than chlorine pools, the water should still be tested weekly for pH and chlorine. Monthly tests are required for other water balance factors and salt levels. Salt levels can drop due to water being splashed out of your swimming pool, filter back-washing, and rain. We at Universal Pool and Spa offer exceptional maintenance service. Our service provides everything needed in keeping your pool in mint condition, no matter how old it is, or how often it is used.
There have been some concerns about how the salt water can effect the pool construction materials, decks and other structures, but we at Universal Pool and Spa properly construct all the pools we build, followed by proper maintenance. When a pool is properly constructed, salt water has no effect on pool finishes, equipment or decks. We only use top of the line materials for every project. Our materials are suitable for salt water pool construction.
If you’re thinking about having a salt water pool built on your property, or if you’re thinking about converting your chlorine pool into salt water, call us today for more detailed information or to set up an appointment for a free consultation and design quote. Benefits of adding a Swimming Pool Solar Heaters

Solar Pool Heaters for Inground Pools
Solar heating systems are not only environmentally friendly, but they also require no maintenance other than winterizing procedures you would normally do. Using the sun’s rays to heat your pool helps to prolong your swimming season which dramatically reduces your heating costs. Solar pool heaters work with a pump that circulates the pool water through the filter while the water flows through the solar collector. As the water passes through the solar collector, it is warmed by the sun and the warm water then flows back into the pool. The water bypasses the solar collector and returns to the pool when the pool has reached the temperature you desire.
Why would anyone want to waste money on a heating system when you can use the sun to heat your pool for free? Solar heaters have an environmentally superior method for cleaning pools while conserving energy. They are virtually free to operate as they have minimal maintenance costs.
Swimming pool water is able to absorb the heat of the sun because solar heaters circulate the water through an expansive heat exchange surface. If you live somewhere where the climate is cooler and there is little sunshine, you may be better off with an electrical heating system, as the sun is the source of heat for solar heated swimming pools.
Some pool owners are thrown off by the initial cost of solar pool heaters but over the past few years the price has dropped significantly and several manufacturers are now marketing less expensive alternatives. This price drop, along with the minimal maintenance cost and positive impact on the environment, make it nearly impossible for pool owners to resist the investment.
You won’t have to replace your solar pool heater for several years because of their durable and expandable quality. If your energy requirements should ever change, solar pool heaters can easily be added. So whether you have a large pool or a small pool you can properly heat your pool water with a solar heater.
Now take some time out to consider the impact pool heating systems have on your pocket book, and think about the toll these costly heaters take on the environment as well. As a swimming pool owner it is no longer an option to protect our environment, it is a responsibility! Solar power pool heaters are a smart choice not just for you but for everyone!

Stamped Concrete Pool Decks and Patios

Stamped Concrete Pool Decks and Patios

Universal Pool and Spa has successfully designed many pool decks and patios. Large or small, simple
or complex, we have the experience and expertise to successfully complete the job, satisfaction
guaranteed! We understand that our clients have different preferences and every project has unique
characteristics.

There are many options to consider when it comes to building a pool deck or patio. Many pool decks
and patios are stamped concrete with patterns of brick, flagstone and cobblestone. Concrete is the
most popular surface for pool decks and patios. Stamped concrete is a highly used application with
natural designs of brick or stone. Decorative stamped concrete on pool decks are an eco-friendly
compliment to any pool or backyard. This type of design is also known as a “stone pool deck” and can
meld with any outdoor environment.

With stamped concrete you can have that natural stone appearance. Stamped concrete is achieved by
a technique that involves pouring concrete and impregnating a textured pattern on its surface. Stamped
concrete can be used anywhere a decorative concrete surface is desired and can duplicate patterns such
as natural stone, cobblestone, brick, pavers and wood. Colors are also added to the designs for natural
appearances.

Pavers and brick have a great look, but are susceptible to underlying surface changes. When
temperatures change, pavers continually move, settle and separate allowing weeds to grow through the
cracks. In addition to the weeds, the surface becomes uneven. However, the solid, continuous surface of
stamped concrete prevents this from happening.

Let us stamp your concrete with our seal of perfection! Call us now to set up an appointment for a free

Swimming Pool Remodeling
Tired of your old, boring swimming pool? Have problems and need repair or remodeling done to your existing pool? Whether you need repairs or just want to add some new landscaping designs for a luxurious look to your already existing pool, we at Universal Pool and Spa can remodel your pool into an absolute paradise.
We offer interior surface refinishing, deck surface refinishing, tile replacement and repair, cleaning system update and replacement, water feature installation, structural repairs, equipment upgrade (including pumps, filters and heaters), hydraulic repairs, lighting repair and upgrades, automated control installation and upgrades, depth conversion, adding an attached or acrylic spa, hardscape and landscape options and much more.
The first phase of our pool remodeling process is draining your pool to the sewer cleanout or to the street in accordance with the city laws and regulations. Once the pool is drained, the interior surface is chipped out by jackhammers and air chisels. If you choose to replace your pools tile, the existing tile will be removed. The construction phase includes additions such as water leveler, dedicated suction line, decking, tile, water features, boulders, new equipment, plumbing, barbeque, fireplaces and more.
The process of the interior surface phase varies depending on the surface you select. Pebble, plaster and 3m quartz are all applied by a pressurized spray nozzle. The finishing touch is then done by hand trowel to a smooth finish. If you choose pebble, the following work day the surface is acid washed to reveal the pebbles natural beauty.
The pool will be filled with water after your new surface has been installed. This takes approximately 12-30 hours, depending on the size of your pool. Once the process of filling has begun, the water should not stop until it has reached the middle of the water line tile.
The start-up phase consists of adding all necessary chemicals to balance the water and mechanically start-up all pumps. At this time during the phase we will instruct you on the operation and maintenance of your new pool equipment and surface. There will be some surface brushing that will be necessary to eliminate residue left over from the new interior surface application process.  After this is done, your pool will be swim ready!

Swimming Pool Shapes

Swimming Pool Designs

There is a lot to consider when having an inground pool built in your backyard. You must think about how much space you have for your pool and your pool landscaping. What type of swimming pool design will you want? What will the primary functions of your pool be? Will your pool be used for activities such as volleyball or swimming laps? Universal Pool and Spa are your go-to swimming pool builders in Los Angeles. We have been in business for 10 years and we have the experience to build any size, shape, or style of swimming pool for you, along with all the accommodations that come with swimming pools and spas. We are an award winning company with many satisfied clients who put their
trust in us. Need help in choosing a pool? Here are just a few types of inground swimming pools to help you. narrow down your choices.

Diving pools are equipped with diving boards or platforms and are generally about 8 to 8 and a half feet deep. Diving pools should not be considered if having a pool built for children, but for adults who seek pool fun and exercise, diving pools can be a great choice. We built a diving pool in the Woodland Hills area of Los Angeles for a young couple practicing to become professional divers and they couldn’t be happier with the outcome.

Freeform pools are naturalistic looking lagoon style pools, they usually have rock features and are built to mimic an oasis. Check out the pool we built in Burbank. (picture of a freeform pool here) Play pools are usually built for cooling off and relaxing in. They are typically no deeper than 5 feet. Play pools are also good to have for playing volleyball and other water sports, including swimming laps. This is the perfect pool choice if you have children. We at Universal Pool and Spa build many play pools for families with young children in Los Angeles areas.

Lap pools are perfect for anyone needing a pool to facilitate exercise or swimming for health and fitness. Lap pools are narrow and usually 50’ long. A client of ours in Shadow Hills was so happy with the outcome of their swimming pool that they referred us to a neighbor who suffers from arthritis and we built her a lap pool which she uses for exercise and she has reported to us that not only is her new swimming pool beautiful, but her arthritis pain has gone away.

Geometric pools are typically more traditional looking. They usually have very straight lines or a consistent radius. Geometric pools are more formal and upscale looking. I can’t tell you how many of these swimming pools we have built in the Los Angeles area alone.

Spools are a combination of a spa and a pool. Spools are known as oversized spas ranging 12’ x 14’ in size. Although spools may be easier to maintain because of their size, spools are not necessarily less expensive due to construction issues. Spools are a great option for someone with a very small yard.
Here is a picture of a spool we built in Sherman Oaks. (spool picture here) Negative edge pools are also known as infinity swimming pools or infinity edge pools. They are more common and require an expert to build. Infinity pools are designed to give the appearance that the pool of water extends all the way out to the horizon. These pools are a luxury to have and we at

Universal Pool and Spa are proud of the awards we made for these pools we built. <Samsung NV3, Samsung VLUU NV3> Infinity pool in Beverly Hills, Ca. built by Universal Pool and Spa. Perimeter overflow pools are very upscale. This is a pool where the water level is the same as the decking. Around the pool perimeter is a notch or channel that the water drains into creating a visual masterpiece. Perimeter overflow pools look similar to a mirror lying on the ground. Check out one of our perimeter overflow pools we built in Calabasas, Ca. <Samsung NV3, Samsung VLUU NV3>

Who needs to go to a Water Park for water fun and waterslides?

Swimming Pool Slides

Who needs to go to a Water Park for water fun and waterslides? Are the kids begging you for some fun
in the sun but you have too much work to do at home? Are you tired of the heat and bored with your
swimming pool? We at Universal Pool and Spa have all the answers for you. Waterslides for your pool
are much more than a 10 foot slide that only goes down. They come in many shapes, sizes and designs
and can liven up your pool experience.

Design and décor are key components in backyard environments. How do waterslide designs
accommodate all of the colors and materials used today? Slides come in as many colors and textures
today as they do configurations and sizes. Smooth, granite-like finishes are available in natural tones,
while solid colors are available in neutrals, as well as blue, white and other choices.

We can build a slide into a natural-looking rock formation. Slides can be built directly into the rocks,
resulting in a beautiful and realistic rockslide. Slides, with or without rock formations, come in kits that
are very affordable and can be installed in just a couple of days. It is always most convenient to have
the slide installed during the construction of the pool. The landscape can be configured to allow ample
space for the size and shape waterslide that homeowners want.

Flume sections come in straight and curved pieces with options that bend to the left or to the right
resulting in numerous length and configuration choices. A number of standard models are available, as
are custom designs that take only a minimal amount of space. Units that twist and turn, creating a long
maze that takes up a considerable amount of space, basic straight slides that fit into a limited space or
any size in-between can be designed easily.

Throw a backyard party your guests will never forget! Give your kids something to do that doesn’t
require them leaving home. Bring out the lemonade and fire up the grill because Universal Pool and Spa
is here to bring that water-park to you!

The Benefits of Swimming for Kids

The Benefits of Swimming for Kids

Swimming is not only fun for kids, it is also therapeutic. Water helps us to relax and relieves stress
because it has healing properties. Swimming is also good exercise. It is a good way to keep cool while
encouraging a healthy level of physical and social activity. Swimming also provides a more effective
workout than some other kid sports and activities and even puts less strain on joints and connective
tissues than other forms of exercise. Swimming is a good cardiovascular workout and it promotes heart
and lung health, increases stamina, improves flexibility and strength, and improves balance and posture.

Swimming can improve the mental well-being of your child. It is a good way to improve your mood,
help combat depression and decreases anxiety. Parents of children with developmental disabilities have
found that group swimming improves family connection, according to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention.

Swimming is a good way to prevent childhood obesity. Overweight children will find that swimming
is an easier form of exercise. It is beneficial for kids with asthma. If your child suffers from juvenile
arthritis, he or she will benefit from the weightlessness of being in the water and they will be less likely
to suffer from asthma attacks while swimming than during any other form of exercise.

It has been documented by researches that the stimulated effect of infant/toddler swim lessons has the
potential to increase intelligence, alertness, and concentration. It has also been reported that swimming
offers improvement in social, emotional, and physical development.

Swimming is a good sport of choice for anyone seeking to make a profession out of it. Most Olympic
swimmers and Lifeguards have swimming experience since childhood. So whether your child wants to
be a lifeguard, a swim coach, a swim instructor, a U.S. NAVY aviation rescue swimmer, or an Olympic
gold medalist, there is no better time to start training than while they are still young!

What to consider when having a swimming pool built

What to consider when having a swimming pool built So you’re finally financially ready to have a swimming pool built in your back yard and your family is ecstatic about it. Here are some things to consider before the construction process… Make sure you know where the sun will shine on the area you wish to have your pool built. No one wants a cold shaded area to enjoy their pool time. A shadow of your house covering your swimming pool area will block the sun. A good approach to your swimming pool plans is watching the sun and how it shines in the area you wish to have your pool and deck built. You should also consider the elevation of your yard. Is the slope (if there is one) going to need a retaining wall? Depending on how you want your pool to sit, retaining walls hold back the soil either in front of or in back of a pool. You should also know whether or not you have septic field drain lines in your yard. You can be fined if you are on city sewer, unless the sewer line runs across the considered pool area. To determine where to build your pool to avoid these lines, Universal Pool and Spa can get you a drawing of your septic system layout. This will show you what was installed in your yard. Is there enough access space to get to your back yard for the equipment that will be used to build your swimming pool? Heavy equipment, tractors and trucks are a few things you will have to consider when it comes to the access of the area you wish to have your swimming pool built. Smaller equipment can be used if there is not efficient access to your property. Do you live in a subdivision with homeowners association? If so, you will need to read and understand their rules and regulations. This can concern the type and size of your pool, where it can be built, and whether or not you will need fencing around your swimming pool. If the HOA requires you to submit a drawing of the project, we at Universal pool and Spa are prepared to provide that for you. If you are considering having a swimming pool built on your property and have any further concerns on what to expect, please feel free to call us to set up an at home, no charge, consultation and design quote. Infinity Pool and Spas

Infinity Swimming Pools

Infinity” pools are also known as “Negative Edgepools. Most swimming pools have a definable edge around them but the infinity pool is an inground pool lacking one or more edges. The infinity pool creates the illusion that the water lacking edges is supported by nothing. Europeans have used this pool for centuries, but they did not gain popularity in the U.S. until the 1950’s.

Infinity pools are especially effective when the edgeless parts of the pool are located over high ground that drops away. These pools are even more beautiful when near a lake or an ocean, giving the illusion that the pool water does not end and is continued into the lake or ocean. On high ground the infinity pool looks like a magic trick. How can the water simply stand up if the pool is not enclosed on all sides with an edge?

Really though, the infinity pool has a side on the edgeless side. This “edgeless look” is accomplished by placing a water collection reservoir below the pool and out of sight. This is made easy when the pool is located at the top of high ground, because anything below the top is not easy to see visually. The water collection reservoir works like the rest of the pool filtration system. Any water collected is filtered back into the pool.

Infinity pools can achieve the “never ending look” in pools that are constructed on two levels. A high level can obscure a level lower down in the pool, which collects any excess water. The pool water can drop down to a large spa or fountain, creating beauty on all sides of the pool. These pools are even more astonishing at night and owners of these pools enjoy their reflective ability. When the sky is covered in stars at night, the pool reflects the stars and the atmosphere and seems to represent the infinity of the sky. If there is a lake or ocean below the pool, a view from the pool several feet away seems to reflect the sky far out into the lake or ocean.

The infinity pool is stunning and luxurious. If you would like to know more about these pools or set up an appointment for a free consultation and design quote, please feel free to call us any time. Universal Pool and Spa (818) 347-6657.

Swimming Pool Decks and Patios

Decks

More people aim their focus on deciding what kind of pool to install and what kind of design and materials to make it from, but they don’t spend as much time thinking about what kind of deck they’ll use. But if you think about it, you will spend as much time on the deck as you would in the swimming pool. Decks are also used for entertaining or just hanging out, so they demand more attention than they get in the planning process.

Do you want your deck to go all around your pool, or only in a semi-circle? What kind, and how much deck furniture will you have? Will you have enough space to walk around the deck once the furniture is placed? These are just some of the questions you have to ask yourself when having a deck made for your pool. It is a wiser choice to go with a deck of larger size than making the mistake of having a deck too small. We at Universal Pool and Spa are your go-to professionals when it comes to deck shape and size.

There is a lot to consider when designing your pools deck, for instance, will the deck be in the shade or the sun? What materials will be used? Will you be adding a spa? Do you plan on having an outdoor kitchen or backyard bar? If so your deck should be adjacent to it.

When choosing pool deck material, there are a lot of options to consider.

We at Universal Pool and Spa have the experience and expertise when it comes to building your deck. For more information about decks or to set up an appointment for a free consultation and design quote, call us now. Universal Pool and Spa (818) 347-6657.
